EU gives Serbia deadline on Mladic

April 6 2006
Stabilisation and association talks for Serbia and Montenegro, a step towards eventual membership in the European Union, resumed yesterday after signs of co-operation over fugitive war crimes suspects. The second round of the talks began with regional politics, trade and financial issues, after the EU gave Serbia one more month to find Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb wartime commander accused of genocide.
If Gen Mladic is not extradited to the UN tribunal for the former Yugoslavia by then, the process will be frozen.

Last week, Carla del Ponte, the tribunal's chief prosecutor, received a promise of unrestricted access to security archives, a move she has demanded for four years. Neil MacDonald, Belgrade
