Million to protest in France over 'defeated' law

Million to protest in France over 'defeated' law
More than a million people are expected to take to the streets in France today to protest against an employment law that they may already have defeated.Several politicians and commentators declared the contrat de première embauche (CPE) dead yesterday, only a day after Jacques Chirac's presidential assent signed it into law.

At Mr Chirac's behest, senior MPs are rewriting the measure to dilute its most contentious provisions, cutting the trial period for young recruits from two years to one and obliging employers to explain dismissals. The revised text will not reach parliament until May.

Despite calls from student leaders for a general strike, there is a growing feeling that the protesters have effectively won.

Edouard Balladur, an MP, said yesterday: "The CPE has gone. It has disappeared and everyone knows it."

The prime minister, Dominique de Villepin, chaired a cabinet meeting yesterday that concentrated on anything but the CPE, which he created and tried to force on a public hostile to reform.
