France Brings Home The A1 Grand Prix Trophy

A1 Team France heads to the final round of the new A1 Grand Prix Series at Shanghai aiming to round off its winning season with another victory in Shanghai. The team clinched the inaugural A1 Grand Prix championship in the last race at Laguna Seca having taken thirteen wins from twenty races, drivers Prémat and Lapierre taking seven and six wins respectively.

France has scored a total of 163 points and lies 42 points ahead of A1 Team Switzerland with one round left to go. Unlike the rest of the season both Lapierre and Prémat will drive the team’s car this weekend Lapierre driving in Friday practice and Prémat taking over on Saturday. Prémat will drive in the sprint race while Lapierre will take over for the feature race.

“I am looking forward to discovering the circuit which is unique, especially the first sector,” said Lapierre. “The circuit has a great layout. It will be my first time at Shanghai and I’m really excited. I’ve also invited one of my sponsors, Regis Dumange the president of a sportswear company based near Nevers in France to share my experience as he has helped me a lot as since 2002 in Formula Renault, in the F3 Euroseries and in the GP2 series.”

Alexandre Prémat adds: “Shanghai is another new track for me. I have some idea of what the track looks like with a good mixture of challenging corner and long straights. It’s quite twisty in some areas and the back straight leads into a corner where you can overtake under the right circumstances. I’m really looking forward to this, the last race of the year. Hopefully we can close the season with another good result for the team.”

Jean-Paul Driot, team principal, A1 Team France commented: “We will try to make a fantastic final out of the race in Shanghai. I have made the decision that our drivers, the two most talented young drivers from France should drive one race each and share the responsibilities. A1 Team France has already won the championship with some outstanding results.”

A1 Team France is one of 25 teams contesting the new A1 Grand Prix Series, the “World Cup of Motorsport“. Since the last round in Laguna Seca, A1 Team France leads the Championship with 163 points. To date the team has scored thirteen wins. Drivers Nicolas Lapierre and Alexandre Prémat are two highly talented youngsters taking turns at the wheel. A1 Grand Prix continues to make huge strides in attracting worldwide audiences in its inaugural season. After its first season races A1GP is reaching an average audience of more than 8 million viewers per race in more than 120 countries.
