Afternoon concert in Bhaktapur

Sunday, March 26,2006
BHAKTAPUR: The location was ancient and the instruments were traditional as well, but the effect was more than refreshing. About 50 music students, instructors and national and international traditional music fans gathered at the Afternoon Concert in the Garden Pavilion at Chupin Ghat in Bhatktapur on Friday, March 24. The musical program featured presentation of antiquated instruments of Nepal and was organized by Kathmandu University, Department of Music with sponsorship from Foumiko Kigasawa.
The concert started with the Dhime Baja performed by master-drummers of Bhaktapur followed by a traditional Newari welcome dance. Also in the program were students of music at KU performing Saraswati prayer. Flute recital by Jeevan Ale added to the melody while a prolonged raga by Suresh Raj Bajracharya on Sarod, and Gert Matthias Wegner on tabla enchanted everyone.

The program also featured an auspicious prayer played by Naubaje experts and sarod presentation by a student of the university. The concert is expected to re-introduce the vanishing instruments of Nepal.
