    Nirmala to run Berlin Marathon

    KATHMANDU, March 24 
    Ace athlete Nirmala Bharati would participate in the 26th edition of the renowned Vattenfall Berlin Half-Marathon to be held in Berlin, Germany on April 2.

    Nepal Athletics Association organized a farewell program today to wish good luck to the national record holder runner. "I am happy to represent Nepal in an international arena," Nirmala commented. "I hope to better my national record as I will be competing with top runners." Nirmala will leave on Monday. Nirmala has broken five national records in previous 12 months.

    The event last year was participated by 15,057 runners representing more than 60 countries. Germany's Luminita Zaituc won the women's event with a timing of 1 hour 11.04 minutes. Nirmala's national record is 1 hour 20.13 minutes. "This is big exposure for Nirmala, and good preparation for upcoming South Asian Games," National Sports Council member-secretary Kishor Bahadur Singh said on the program.

    Nirmala is participating in the race on joint effort of NAA, German Embassy, NSC, Nepal Police Central Sports Development Committee and Nepal German Athletics Development Project. Team manager and NAA vice-president Rajiv Bikram Shah is bearing his own costs while the race director Mark Milde is sponsoring the team in Germany.

    "Many talents have emerged in various events," AIGP Amar Singh Shah, also NAA vice-president said.

    "We hope for top 20 finish from Nirmala." Gunter Lange, the director of Nepal German Project, thanked all the sponsoring parties. "I am confident of good performance from Nirmala as usual," he said.

    On the occasion, NAA secretary Rajan Khatri and NSC officials were present.
