Pokhara ready to host Aaha Gold Cup

POKHARA, Feb 21 - The country's biggest Pokhara Stadium is all set to host the biggest event of the Western Region, the Fourth Aaha Gold Cup Invitational Football Tournament beginning here Tuesday.
The newly renovated stadium is heavily decorated to host the event. "We have completed the preparation," organizing Sahara Club's president Bikram Thakali said. "A few teams have already arrived adding more flavor to the atmosphere."

A dozen of teams, including two teams from India and one local team comprising of only African players, are contesting for the title. Organizing club, as usual, has two teams while India's Eastern Railways is returning after three years. Tribhuvan Army Club is making its debut.

Sahara Club boasts of Nepali players living in United Kingdom. The duo - Bahar Luxemberg and Bimal Sherchan - had also supported the renovation of the stadium.

It is an honor to play in such a beautiful place," Bimal who plays minor football in England said. "As a player, we always hope for victories but this will be a once in a life-time experience to play in a new field with new players.

" ANFA Academy and Sahara Red will play the opening match. ANFA Academy is already in the city and had a practice session on Monday.

The event, however, will feel the absence of Nabil Three Star and India's City Young Football Club and Mohan Bagan. Three Star chose to skip the event for an event in Pakistan, the organizers said.

The organizers have also made an increment in cash prizes. The winner will now pocket Rs 75,000 while the runner-up gets Rs 50,000. The best player of the event receives Rs 20,000 while the highest scorer will get Rs 15,000. Sahara Club hopes to make it a South Asian level event and manage the Sahara Football Academy with the benefits. The organizers expect more than 60,000 spectators for the event
