Nepal stuns South Africa by 2 runs

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA, Feb 16 - Nepal rode on skipper Kanishka Chaugai's robust half century to stun cricket powerhouse South Africa by 2 runs in a pulsating Plate Championship semi-final of the ICC U-19 cricket tournament played in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Thursday.
History repeated itself as Nepali bowlers held their nerves to justify the efforts of the Nepali batsmen in a thrilling encounter. Chaugai playing his third and last world cup produced his second fifty of the tournament ensured a challenging total for their more celebrated opponents.

Batting first, Nepal scored 214 runs losing 8 wickets in the allotted 50 overs.

Chasing the target of 215, South Africa was restricted to 212/5.

Nepali opener produced a 67 run partnership for the first wicket with Mahesh Chhetri (15) and 38 for the second wicket with Sharad Veswarkar (19) to beat the Proteas for the second consecutive encounter; the former being in the last ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh in 2004.

The flamboyant start of the Nepali innings however faltered when the spinners Jean Symes and Richard Das Neves were brought into attack. The spinners restricted freely scoring Nepali batsmen as Symes claimed 3 crucial wickets, including the one of Chaugain. It was in-form Gyanendra Malla's unbeaten 46 that ensured the challenging total.

Nepal will lock horns with New Zealand in the Plate final on Saturday.
