Parties begin poll preparations

Kathmandu, March 03 2008 - Madhesi parties in Banke are busy in the homework of selecting candidates for constituent assembly (CA) polls following the agreement reached between the government and the United Madhesi Democratic Front (UMDF).

Terai-Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP), Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum (MJF) and Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Mahato) are busy selecting candidates for the first-past-the-post (FPTP) elections.

"TMLP is busy holding discussion over the selection of candidates for the first-past-the-post (FPTP) elections," TMLP central member Bijay Gupta said.
Gupta has been selected candidate for the FPTP from the constituency no 3 unopposed, the TMLP district committee said.

Names of six candidates have been recommended for the proportional elections, the TMLP Banke said.

MJF has recommended names of Phularam Chaudhari; Stiyad Rai; Sarbadev Ojha and Hasan Mohamad Khan and Harilal Loniya for constituency no 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively for the FPTP elections, MJF district chairman Sarbadev Ojha said.

Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Mahato) is also busy selecting candidates for the polls, a party source said.

Meanwhile, major political parties are intensifying their activities in connection with the polls in the district. Parties with their candidates are organising publicity programmes in villages.

CPN-UML central member and candidate for constituency no 4 Govinda Koirala is busy with poll related activities. He organised a larger party cadres gathering at Kajura yesterday. Over 2000 cadres attended the gathering. Addressing the gathering, Koirala said that democratic republic would be established in the country after the polls. Another UML candidate Dal Bahadur Sunar whose name is listed for proportional elections is also busy in publicity.

NC district president Krishna Man Shrestha is also contesting from constituency no 4. He said that he was encouraged after visiting Radhapur and Sitapur areas. He said NC will organise gathering in each village in connection to the polls starting from March 4.

Maoist district in-charge Athak said that Maoist candidates are visiting villages and establishing their relation with people. Candidates have already started publicity programmes in constituency no 1, 2 and 4 and the programme will be started in constituency no 3 from Sunday." People of Radhapur and Sitapur received us with traditional bands in constituency no 4", Athak said.

Rastriya Prajatantra Party central member and candidate for constituency no 3 Dhawal Shumsher Rana said that he is busy in poll activities.
Parties including Janamorcha Nepal, Nepal Workers and Peasant Party, Rastriya Janamorcha and CPN- Integrated are also busy in poll activities.
