Kathmandu, Feb 07 2008 - Following a marathon meeting between Home Ministry officials, Chief District Officers and Superintendents of Police of three districts of the Valley at the Home Ministry this afternoon, the Metropolitan Police conducted raids in major offices of the Young Communist League (YCL) in the Valley this evening.

The YCL cadres took to the streets to protest against the raids in their offices by burning tyres and chanting slogans against the government.
Police conducted raids at YCL offices located at the Balaju Industrial Area, Gwarko, Lalitpur and Ghatthagar of Bhaktapur.

Police said the raids were conducted as they received complaints alleging YCL cadres of detaining some persons in their offices.
“We conducted raids as we received complaints regarding the detention of many people in YCL offices,” SP at the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, Sarbendra Khanal, said. Police didn’t find anything in the office.

Valley in-charge of the YCL Sagar said police tried to vacate the offices. “They had to return because of the YCL’s protests,” he said.
The YCL cadres staged protests in different places following the raids at their offices.

They burnt tyres and chanted slogans against the government at Balaju, Kalanki, Bhotahiti, Gwarko and Baneshwor for three hours from 7 pm. Police and YCL said they didn’t clash in any places. Maoist ministers Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Dev Gurung and Matrika Yadav visited the YCL office at Gwarko following a raid at the office.

Maoist deputy commander Barshaman Pun alias Ananta said the operation at YCL offices and YCL cadres was Nepali Congress’ (NC) ploy to spoil the environment for the CA polls.

“The security personnel not only raided YCL offices; they also raided rented rooms of YCL cadres without search warrants. This is illegal. Though it is a provocative action, we would deal with it patiently and politically,” he said.
