 -  Kantipur

Kathmandu, Feb 04 2008 - The Election Commission has cautioned the government that it may not be able to carry out preparations for the April 10 Constituent Assembly elections in Terai plains if the security situation in the region did not improve.

The Commission had summoned Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Poudel to notify the government that it cannot dispatch the election-related materials to and deploy the electoral officials in the violence-torn districts.

The commission officials also asked Poudel, who is also the chief government negotiator, told expedite the dialogue process with the agitators so that the election-conducive environment could be created.

Of late large swaths of the southern plains, especially in eastern Nepal, is reeling under almost regular general strikes by the regional parties and violent activities carried out by a number of armed outfits who are hell bent to scuttle the crucial vote unless their demands are fulfilled.

The government, on the other hand, has not been able to hold effective talks with any of the major players in the region so far.
