ADB gives 25 million dollars to bring Internet to rural Nepal

 -  AFP

MANILA, Jan 30 2008 -  The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Wednesday it would provide a grant of 25 million dollars to bring the Internet and other forms of information technology to remote areas of Nepal.

The grant would be used to provide remote regions with wireless broadband networks through public-private partnership arrangements, the ADB said in a statement from its headquarters in the Philippine capital.

The grant was also aimed at establishing a government information and communication technology network and to develop various Internet applications for the government, the multilateral institution added.

The mountainous terrain of Nepal presents barriers to sustainable growth and development and the government recognises that information and communication technology is the most effective way to counter such obstacles, the ADB said.
