Nepal's PM appoints daughter to Cabinet, adds 7 other ministers and junior ministers

Jan 10 2008, Kathmandu - Nepal's prime minister appointed his daughter to the Cabinet and named seven more ministers and junior ministers on Thursday, the prime minister's office said in a statement.

Prime Minister Girija Koirala appointed his daughter, Sujata Koirala, as a minister without a portfolio. Ministers without a portfolio normally fill in for colleagues who are sick or traveling abroad.

Sujata Koirala's appointment comes as a surprise because she has been accused of corruption and using her father's position for her own financial gain, although she denies the allegations and they have never been proven.

Formula Mansur, from the prime minister's Nepali Congress Party, has been appointed Minister for Science and Environment. Koirala also added two junior ministers from his party.

Ram Chandra Raya Yadav of the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist) has been appointed the minister for general administration, and a junior minister from his party was also named.

The former communist rebels, now widely known as the Maoists, will have two new junior ministers in the government.

The three parties are the major stake holders in the seven-party coalition government.

The new ministers are all expected to be sworn in on Friday.

The last changes in government were made late last month when the Maoists rejoined the government after the main political parties agreed to abolish the monarchy immediately after elections scheduled for April.

The Maoists withdrew from the government in September demanding electoral reform and the king's immediate removal. That plunged Nepal into political crisis and forced the government to postpone elections.
