Jan 09 2008, Kathmandu - Nepali Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala reiterated on Wednesday that a new date for the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections would be fixed within a week.

During his meeting with the U.S. ambassador to Nepal Nancy J. Powell at the PM's official residence in Kathmandu, Koirala said the ruling Seven-Party-Alliance was committed to hold the CA elections by mid-April this year.

Powell expressed concerns over the environment and date for holding the CA polls.

According to the PM's foreign affairs advisor Adatya Baral, who was also present in the meeting, the U.S. ambassador suggested that it would be better to hold the CA elections at the earliest date to end the transitional phase.

Powell also said she had been mulling over extending the U.S. assistance to the Election Commission.

She urged Koirala to assist the U.S. government in resettlement process of the Bhutanese refugees languishing at camps in eastern Nepal.

She said 220 Bhutanese refugees would be resettled soon in America as part of the first phase of resettlement process.

Some 106,000 Bhutanese refugees have been living in seven camps in eastern Nepal for 17 years.
