Big Media Houses Against Us: Prachanda

 -  The Himalayan Times

Dec 04 2007 - Chairman of Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist, Prachanda today accused Nepal's press of deliberately planning to uproot the revolutionary party by spreading “wrong message” against it.

“Nepali press, especially some big media houses with high circulations, do not want the Maoists to come to power. That is why they never stop sensitising travail issues related to our party,” he said, while addressing a workshop on media freedom.

He also said that those media houses are afraid that the Maoists might not let the media survive if they come to power and are conducting a “campaign” against the party.
Prachanda also said that there was no alternative to unity among the political parties to materialise the dream of building a new Nepal. “There is no alternative to peace and unity in this critical turn of events,” he said. But, he also said that the election of whatever kind would be meaningless if the issue of election of constituent assembly is not linked with the whole peace process.

He reminded that two of the major clauses of the peace agreement were restructuring the state with equal emphasis to all ethnic groups, religions and regions; and moving towards the election of the constituent assembly with assimilation of the two armies under UN supervision.

Minister of Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Paudel said that Nepali Congress is theoretically convinced about declaration of republic from the House and also on all out proportional representation but added, “Still, we cannot ignore the importance of technicalities in the democratic process”.

General Secretary of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal said that the democracy without press freedom would be handicapped and would not be able to give a direction to this critical situation of the conflict resolution.

He also urged the government to come up with solutions to present deadlock of political crisis as only commitment would not win hearts of the people who have been waiting for the election for over a year. The two-day workshop was organized by Federation of Nepalese Journalists.
