Dec 02 2007 - A high-level European Union (EU) delegation is set to visit Nepal to underline the importance of holding the constituent assembly polls at the earliest so as to boost the country's landmark peace process that has been stalled due to political deadlock.

The EU troika delegation will consist of officials from Portugal, the current EU presidency, Slovenia, the forthcoming EU Presidency, the European Commission and the European Council. The delegation will be in Nepal from December 3 to 6.

"The Troika will offer its support to the Government to put in place the key building blocks of the peace process to enable credible elections at the earliest opportunity," the EU said.

"The aim of the visit is to express continued EU support for Nepal's peace process and to encourage the parties to work together to meet the demands that the people of Nepal have expressed for change and peace," the EU said, adding "An essential part of this will include free and fair elections".

The EU delegation will meet Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, party leaders including Maoists, government officials, human rights activists and representatives of civil society.

The delegation will also discuss the improvement in public security, the future of Maoist combatants, an end to impunity for human rights abuses, progress on development and dialogue with marginalised groups, the EU said in a statement.
