Envoys of India, China and US urge PM for timely CA polls

Oct 03 2007 - The Ambassadors of India, China and the United States Tuesday called on Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and urged him not to postpone the Constituent Assembly elections slated for November 22.
The Indian envoy Shiv Shanker Mukharjee, Chinese envoy Zheng Xianglin and US envoy Nancy Powell held separate meetings with the PM at latter’s official residence in Baluwatar today.

During the meetings, they urged PM Koirala to hold the CA elections on the scheduled time as postponing the elections would disappoint the common people, according to the Baluwatar sources.

This comes at a time when the CA elections appear uncertain owing to differences between the major parties, particularly PM Koirala-led Nepali Congress and CPN-Maoist, over the electoral system.

While PM Koirala insists that the Maoists should not backtrack from the earlier agreement for the mixed electoral system, Maoist Chairman Prachanda has shown no sign of softening his stance on a fully proportional system.

A crucial round of talks between the top leaders of the seven parties is expected tomorrow to harmonize their positions on the electoral system, inter alias.

The Maoists have threatened to disrupt the November elections if the other parties do not agree on their demands.
