Strike affects life in capital valley

 -  Gorkhapatra

Aug 23 2007 - The bandh organised jointly by Joint Dalit Republican Front and Tamang National Freedom Front Wednesday affected the lives in the Valley and ten districts around the Kathmandu Valley.

Protesters vandalised one motorbike and smashed the windshields of one vehicle belonging to Himalayan Journeys. The vehicle was carrying tourists. Police have arrested three dozens of protesters who were trying to enforce bandh in Kathmandu.

President of Joint Dalit Republican Front Tilak Pariyar said that the bandh was largely successful due to the cooperation of the Valley dwellers. He said police arrested 40 supporters of the Front and the protesters clashed with the public when the latter defied the bandh in Jawalakhel and Ekantakuna of Lalitpur.

Likewise, the bandh called by Tamang National Freedom Front affected the normal lives in Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Dhading, Makawanpur, Sindhupalchowk, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Kavre, Chitwan and Dolakha districts.

Former president of the Front and lawmaker Hit Bahadur Tamang informed that the Front workers Gyanu Tamang and Karuna were injured in Jawalakhel when police baton-charged them. He added that police arrested four from Ratna Park, eight from Bagbazaar, five from Baneshwor, two from Thapathali, two from Koteshwor and three from New Road.

Chief of the Metropolitan Police DSP Sarbendra Khanal said no untoward incident happened during the bandh and all those arrested have been released.

The demands of the bandh organisers include announcement of republic from the interim parliament before the CA elections and implementation of proportional election system in the CA polls.
