Govt-ethnic groups talks fail

 -  Southasian Media

Aug 14 2007 - The talks between the government and various ethnic groups held on Monday in Dhulikhel of Kavre district ended inconclusively.

The four hour long negotiations ended in the evening with the government asking for more time to consider their demands.

Representatives of Limbuwan Rajya Parishad, Khumbuwan Mukti Morcha, Sanghiya Ganatantrik Morcha and Tamang Saling Swayatta Parishad held talks with the government team, which was led by Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Poudel.

The ethnic groups put forth their demands including guarantee of autonomy based on ethnic, lingual and regional lines; proportional representation and federal republic. Kumar Lingden of Limbuwan group claimed that the government was not positive to their demands.

Although the negotiation could not decide when they would meet next, they have agreed to meet in either Biratnagar or Dharan.

The Limbuwan and Khumbuwan groups had imposed indefinite strike in eastern region last week to press their demands. They have warned to re-launch their agitation if the talks do not succeed within ten days.
