July 30 2007 - The government today decided to release Rs 50 million for relief and rehabilitation measures in the wake of floods and landslides that have displaced thousands of people in the Tarai and the hills.

The decision to this effect was made at the end of an emergency meeting which was convened today following an intense lobbying for it earlier in the day. Among others, the Nepali Congress had told the government to launch relief measures at the earliest.

“The government has released Rs 5 crore. The money will be used to rehabilitate and provide relief materials to the people affected by recent floods and landslides,” Minister for General Administration Ram Chandra Yadav said.

The government has also appealed to the international community to extend much-needed cooperation to Nepal following the natural disasters. Minister for Information and Communications Krishna Bahadur Mahara made the appeal after the meeting. He said members of the cabinet will be contributing 7.5 per cent of their monthly salaries to carry out relief measures.

Minister Yadav said this was the only agenda for the day. As the meeting was an irregular one, it did not have anything else on the agenda, Yadav said.
Meanwhile, the home ministry said the incessant rainfall and floods in the rivers of the Tarai have claimed at least 69 lives.

It has so far affected people in 28 districts. It has damaged 746 houses totally and 485 houses partially. Government data shows that 87,649 people from 15,879 houses have been affected. “It is time for the whole nation to work cautiously and provide relief to the victims,” said joint secretary Pratap Pathak at a press meet at the Home Ministry today.
