India, Nepal hold talks on border check-points

July 21 2007 -  Senior officials of India and Nepal held discussions on matters relating to upgradation of border infrastructure in four major Indo-Nepal border checkpoints.

An eight-member Indian delegation led by U N Panjiyar, Secretary (Border) of the Indian Union Home Ministry arrived here yesterday in connection with the meeting, according to Indian Embassy sources.

The delegation will hold the meeting with their Nepalese counterpart on the Joint Planning Direction Committee constituted for constructing four world class border check points - Biratnagar-Jogbani, Birgunj-Raxaul, Bhairahawa-Sunauli and Nepalgunj-Nepalgunj Road with the assistance from the Government of India.

The delegation will hold discussions with the Nepalese team headed by Acting Secretary in the Ministry of Physical Planning and Construction Purna Kadariya on July 21, officials said.

They would review the progress of the project and hold discussion in detail on forwarding the construction process. The project includes upgrading the roads in the border checkpoints, constructing world class facilities for clearance in the four checkposts and arranging other necessary facilities to enhance border trade.

A programme has also been scheduled to monitor the land acquired for the project in Birgunj by the representatives of the both teams during the visit, according to officials.
