    Nepali parliament passes Right to Information Bill

    July 19 2007 - The Environment, Communication and Technology Committee of Nepal's interim parliament passed the Bill on Right to Information-2006/07 with amendments on Friday.

    The much awaited Bill will ensure Nepali people the rights to information, the National News Agency reported.

    The provision of an independent National Information Commission was also made for the protection, promotion and exercise of the right to information.
    The proposed Bill also comprises a system of penalty and compensation regarding the protection of information.

    Nepali Minister for Information and Communications Krishna Bahadur Mahara, while thanking legislators for passing the Bill, expressed confidence that the Bill would add a new dimension in the journalism sector of Nepal.

    The meeting was presided over by legislator Narayan Prasad Regmi.
