Nepal embassy to hold ‘awareness’ programme

 -  Gulf Times

July 06 2007 - The Nepal Embassy plans to hold an “awareness” programme for members of Nepalese community in Qatar, with the participation of representatives of forums working under the direct aegis of South Asian embassies functioning in the country.

Speaking to Gulf Times yesterday, charge de affaires of the Nepalese mission, Ram Kaji Khadka said the proposal to hold such a programme had come from some community forums, who felt an urgent need to educate educationally backward members of the community on a number of issues.

He pointed out that already initiatives were under way under the auspices of the Nepalese embassy to set up a full-fledged benevolent fund for helping the community members in distress. An ad hoc forum has been constituted and an executive committee, headed by an embassy official will be formed latest by the end of this month, said Khadka.

The official said what the Nepal embassy had in its plans was something on the lines of the Indian Community Benevolent Fund (ICBF), constituted under the guidelines and directives of the Indian embassy.

He said he was also impressed by the enormous pace of activities of the Indian body.

Kheda said what the Nepalese mission had in mind was an awareness programme where experts on various issues like community welfare, labour and legal assistance from other South Asian communities could provide their expertise to the Nepalese community.

Such a step would prove to be more beneficial to the community members, said the official.

He also acknowledged that the community was facing hurdles in issues like sending home the bodies of its nationals who had died in Qatar.
The embassy spokesperson said a large number of the country’s Nepalese expatriates were not familiar with the rules and guidelines involved in issues of sending the bodies home, sponsorship, existence of health cards facility and legal remedies available in Qatar.

Khadka felt that with the hosting of an awareness session involving representatives of different forums working under the aegis of diplomatic missions from South Asian countries, would benefit community members.
