June 08 2007 - Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) general secretary Madhav Nepal Thursday met former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh and thanked Indian parties for supporting the democratic process in his country.

"Rajnath Singh expressed his concern over the growing influence of Maoists in various parts of Nepal which in turn undermine the democratic process and values," said a statement issued by the BJP after the meeting.

Rajnath Singh also emphasised the importance of Nepal maintaining its existing religious and cultural identity, which he termed as the foundation of the relationship between India and the Himalayan nation over centuries.

He said that Kathmandu should take proactive steps in preserving the religious identity of its Hindu and Buddhist heritage revered by millions across the world.

The communist leader also discussed with Rajnath Singh the agitation of Madhesis, people of Indian origin living in the Terai region of Nepal, and assured the BJP leader that he would convey his suggestions and concerns to his party colleagues, according to the statement.
