Jumanu makes merry

KATHMANDU, Feb 3 - Jumanu Rai scored a brilliant hat trick as powerhouse Mahendra Police Club (MPC) registered a convincing victory after a long period in the Martyr's Memorial SanMiguel National Football League with a 4-1 thrashing of Sankata Sports Club.
Elsewhere at Halchowk, the threat of relegation looms large over Mahabir Club after it succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of fellow struggler Macchindra Football Club on the season's fastest goal from Bijay Shahi.

He scored the goal in the 22nd second of the match. Mahabir is equal on 19 points but is in the relegation zone as Machhindra has superior goal difference.

Likewise, the fight for the fifth place between Gyanendra APF Club and New Road Team (NRT) is still on as both the sides played a dour goalless draw earlier at the Dashrath Stadium.

In the second match of Halchowk, Boys' Union Club (BUC) kept its place intact in the country's premier football division defeating Brigade Boys Club (BBC) 2-0.

The policemen's win means they are second at the table leapfrogging Manang Marsyangdi Club and Tribhuvan Army Club both of whom have a match in hand.

MPC is tied with Three Star at the top but goal draught in the second half of the league forced it to second with Three Star having superior goal difference.

Veteran Dev Narayan Chaudhary once again proved pivotal for MPC as he set a perfect ball from his trademark header off Parbat Pandey's freekick offering joy to out-of-form Arjun Rijal who tapped it in to give MPC a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

It was Arjun's fifth goal despite getting frequent starts in the second half of the league.

MPC looked set to double the lead in the 22nd minute through Deepak Poudel's freekick with the ball heading towards Sankata nets but Arjun spoilt the party handling it midway only to get a caution and miss the next match having been booked in the earlier match.

However, Jumanu's mesmerizing work began in the 29th minute when he headed home his first dodging  inexperienced third-choice Sankata goalie Bhaskar Dhoj Khadka who made a desperate attempt to clear the ball.

Dev Narayan set his second goal of the match and Jumanu also notched his second in the 39th minute to make it 3-0. Sankata pulled one back through Rajkumar Ghishing after a horrible mistake from defender Suman Subedi into the sixth minute of the second half but the day belonged to Jumanu and his team as the MPC marksman celebrated his 13 goals and first hat trick of the season in the injury time with a powerful rightfooter.

Machhindra's Bijay Shahi scored the fastest goal of the league in a crucial tie against Mahabir at Halchowk.

It was only 22 second when Deepak Rai set a perfect ball to Bijay who rounded off goalie Min Basnet to score an early and decisive lead. Deepak Amatya is the fastest goal scorer of Nepali league scoring in 17 seconds.

Later, BUC virtually ended its relegation tension with a convincing 2-0 win over BBC. African Mark D Afam was the unofficial man of the match setting a goal and scoring one. Hari Thakuri beat the offside trap to open BUC account in the 22nd minute on a through ball from Afam.

And in the 34th minute, Afam connected a brilliant rightfooter from inside the penalty area to seal the match 2-0. BUC has gathered bulky 10 points from its last five matches.

In another dour goalless match between APF and NRT, sides looked happy on sharing points. NRT played the match without injured marksman Yugal Kishor Rai.
