Surendra strikes for Three Star

KATHMANDU, Feb 2 - Nabil Three Star Club extended its lead at the top following a 1-0 win over Jawalakhel Youth Club (JYC) on Wednesday in the Martyr's Memorial SanMiguel National Football League. Three Star leads the table with 55 points from 23 matches.
Powerhouse Manang Marsyangdi Club is breathing under the neck of Three Star after registering a 2-0 win over struggling Friends' Club. Elsewhere at Halchowk, Tribhuvan Army Club's title hunt is on after the armymen demolished Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) 4-0.

Both Manang and Army are tied at 53 points – two points behind Three Star and a point ahead of fellow title contender Mahendra Police Club. Mahabir Club and Bouddha FC shared points in the battle of survival that ended 1-1.

In the action-packed Lalitpur derby, in-form Surendra Tamang once again proved instrumental in the defending champion's victory after he scored the decider in the 63rd minute to give Three Star a much-needed win.

With the goal, Surendra Tamang is behind BBC's Obagbemiro Junior with 19 goals in the high-scorer list of the league. JYC offered a tough fight to the champions but was unlucky as JYC players missed several chances in the match.

Earlier, MMC needed two late goals to secure all three points from struggling Friends' Club. Nigerian playmaker Imoh Daniel broke the ice in the 77th minute that was followed by an injury time strike from captain Kumar Thapa.

Imoh connected a brilliant bicycle kick after a Nabin Neupane corner deflected from a Friends' defender to open Manang's account.

At Halchowk, Mahabir's goalie Min Basnet saved a penalty to hold bottom-of-the-table Bouddha FC to a 1-1 draw. Bikash Sapkota opened Bouddha's account in the seventh minute but Bouddha missed a golden chance to take the match beyond the reach of Mahabir when goalie Min saved a penalty off Pradip Kunwar when Himal Chandra Thapa handled the ball inside the penalty area in the 43rd minute. Babulal Hasda scored the equalizer off Manoj Shahi's pass in the 73rd minute to snatch a point from the match.

In the second match, Army team scored three first-half goals to beat RCT 4-0. Raju Tamang's brilliant rightfooter from the edge gave the armymen a 1-0 lead as early as in the sixth minute followed by Shiva Chaudhary's deflected goal in the 19th minute. Captain Janamat Karki scored his 18th goal of the league in the 37th minute while defender Chun Bahadur Thapa headed a Raju Tamang corner to complete the win.
