Dev Narayan spares MPC the blushes

KATHMANDU, Jan 29 - Discarded veteran Dev Narayan Chaudhary came from nowhere to set up a goal and score a decider in Mahendra Police Club's (MPC) come-from-behind 2-1 win over Jawalakhel Youth Club (JYC) in the Martyr's Memorial SanMiguel National League Saturday.
With the win, MPC is breathing down the neck of champion Three Star Club with 47 points while Manang Marsyangdi Club is third after beating highflying Boys' Union Club (BUC) 2-0 later on the day. Elsewhere at Halchowk, Mahabir Club, with 18 points, came out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 upset of Sankata Sports Club and Gyanendra APF remained fifth at 40 points with a resounding 3-0 win over Machhindra FC.

The defeat pushed Machhindra, which has 16 points, back into relegation zone while Sankata is eighth with 28.

JYC looked set to win after taking lead through Abdul Gani Olawale in the 19th minute. But mpc looked sharp after Chaudhary replaced Raju Katuwal in the second half. Chaudhary, who had just played 38 minutes in the league so far coming on as second half substitute twice, began to trouble JYC defense and he finally set up striker Jumanu Rai perfectly to bury a powerful right footer past JYC goalie Mohammad Nijamuddin in the 69th minute.

Prabin Manandhar handled the ball on counterattack forcing referee Surendra Sikhrakar to point at the spot. Chaudhary took charge and put the ball inside JYC nets to score MPC's winner.

In another match at Dashrath Stadium, defender Umesh Upreti and Nigerian striker Nurudeen Olawale struck goals to help MMC beat BUC 2-0.

In the match, MMC goalie Bikash Malla had to save a couple of stunners while two of the MMC efforts found the woodwork. After a goalless first half, Umesh headed home Kumar Thapa's corner in the 72nd minute and three minutes later Nurudeen doubled lead following Tashi Tschering's good work from the left.

At Halchowk, struggling Mahabir Club (MC) secured a facesaving 2-1 win over Sankata. Amar Pun gave Mahabir lead in the 23rd minute against the run of play as Sankata went offensive right from the start.

Amar netted a Uche Obyegbule freekick amidst a melee in the penalty box. With the first half goal, Mahabir dominated the second half until Rajkumar Ghising equalized for Sankata.

Ghising found the nets past the crowded Mahabir penalty area off a back pass from skipper Kailash Dangol in the 64th minute.

Five minutes later a fatal confusion between defenders and Sankata second choice goalie Deepak Dangol resulted in a goal off Mahabir skipper Manoj Shahi's corner.

His curling corner kissed the inner bar as the defenders and keeper looked at each other while the ball crossed the goalline.

Earlier, home team APF put up a coordinated team effort to tame Machhindra 3-0. Skipper Ganesh Lawati scored the opener for APF in the 37th minute in a counterattack move. The rest of the goals came in the second half.

Raghu Prajapati scored the second goal early into the second half. He utilized a Mani Pandit pass from inside the penalty box in the 47th minute. Dhanbir Chaudhary's strong drop header off a Man Sajan Bhandari corner gave no chance to Machhindra goalie Amit Rai.
